Tollywood Bans Prakash Raj

SHOOTINGSTAR

Step Taken For Skipping Shooting; Insiders Cry Conspiracy

It needed the combined strength of several big heroes and producers to finally impose a ban on Tollywood’s most favourite baddie and character actor Prakash Raj. Interestingly, this is the first time ever that an artiste has been banned by the Telugu film industry.

Attempts were made earlier too to enforce a ban on Prakash Raj but with a section of the industry standing by the actor, it did not work.

A coordination committee of Telugu Film Producers Council and Movie Artistes Association has now officially imposed the ban on the national award winning actor. The decision was taken as the actor did not honour his commitment to report for the shooting of the movie ‘Sidhu’.
The movie was held up for long and raised a controversy in 2006 as Prakash Raj refused to shave off his moustache for the film as the role had demanded it. Since he was not reporting for shooting, the producer complained to the Telugu Film Producers Council.

“Prakash Raj was given a chance to explain himself and honour dates given for the shooting, but he did not respond. Since a ban has now been imposed on him, the Telugu Film Producers’ Council and Movie Artistes’ Association will not cooperate with anyone who signs him up,” Council general secretary T V D Prasad told ‘TOI’ on Friday. Prakash Raj is a busy actor in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil films.

Telugu film industry insiders, however, interpret the ban as a conspiracy by several big heroes and producers vexed with the ways of the villain. It is learnt that problems cropped up during the shooting of recent big films in including Pavan Kalyan’s ‘Jalsa’, NTR Jr’s ‘Kantri’, and ‘Parugu’ starring Allu Arjun.

The Telugu film industry has always had a love-hate relationship with Prakash Raj who starred in some of the biggest hits like ‘Varsham’, ‘Stalin’, ‘Bommarillu’, ‘Tagore’, ‘Pokiri’, ‘Mass’, ‘Sivamani’ to mention a few. Industry sources said these heroes and producers waited until their projects were over and only then lodged oral complaints with the Producers’ Council. As they were unwilling to give written complaints, the old issue of ‘Sidhu’ was revived to formally impose a ban on him.
