Actor, Model Dev Gill Interview
Meet Milkha’s T-town ‘enemy’: Dev Gill
The menacing Pakistani athlete Abdul Khaliq, who looks down upon Indian champion runner Milkha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag before being defeated, was none other than T-town villain Dev Gill, who was seen as a ruthless warrior in Magadheera.
“After watching me in Bhaag Milkha..., many thought that I was actually a Pakistani actor and director Rakesh Mehra had to explain that I was none other than the Magadheera guy,” says the actor.
Dev says he had a great time working with Farhan Akhtar. “Farhan breathed life into the role and I was inspired by his commitment and it reflected in my performance too. Getting to play real-life roles is a rare opportunity,” he adds.
The actor who was also seen in Telugu hits like Ragada and Nayak, underwent a 30-day training programme with runners from the US and Indian Railways for his role in Bhaag Milkha... “They wanted to show me as a strongly-built athlete. I had to practise running seven hours a day and I lost almost 7 kg, but it was all worth it,” says Dev. “I am a Sardar and I had to play a Muslim while Farhan is a Muslim and he was playing a Sardar. That was another challenge we had to surpass besides the finishing line on track,” he says.
Dev also says that he finds similarities between Telugu director Rajamouli and B-town director Rakesh Mehra. “Both are highly creative, and make actors ‘visualise’. However, Rajamouli was the director who launched me and made a star out of me. I am indebted to him for giving me the once-in-lifetime role of Ranadeera,” he adds. About Bollywood offers post-Bhaag Milkha..., Dev says, “A big announcement is awaited but Tollywood will remain close to my heart.”
