Olympics Opening Ceremony Photo Gallery

Resurgent China opened the Olympics on Friday with volleys of fireworks at a spectacular ceremony that wove ancient Chinese history with modern wizardry and aimed to draw a line under months of political controversy.

Drums thundered, firecrackers exploded and 14,000 performers poured through the Bird's Nest stadium in a dazzling extravaganza that offered up a vision of global harmony echoing the Games' motto "One World One Dream".

Around 80 world leaders watched the show which celebrated the achievements of imperial China, totally ignoring the fraught 20th century, when civil war, the Japanese invasion and hardline Communist rule left the nation mired in poverty.

"Friends have come from afar, how happy we are," an army of 2,008 drummers chanted, quoting the celebrated sage Confucius.

Friday's ceremony caps seven years of work that has reshaped Beijing and sets the seal on an industrial boom that has turned the country into the world's fourth largest economy.

However, the Olympic spotlight has also cast a harsh glare on the vast Asian nation, bringing the unrest in its Tibetan region to a wide audience and showing that China's leadership is not ready to brook any internal dissent.

Pounding drums launched Friday's ceremony on a hot and humid evening before giant fireworks in the form of footsteps blasted above the heart of the capital, crossing Tiananmen Square as they progressed to the steel-latticed Bird's Nest.

The authorities opened the vast square, scene of a doomed student uprising in 1989, to let people watch the pyrotechnics, prompting thousands of delighted Beijing residents to rush into the esplanade screaming "Go China!"

RECORD COST

The Games carry a $43 billion price tag, dwarfing the $15 billion splashed out by Athens in 2004, and run until Aug. 24, with 10,500 athletes from a record 204 nations chasing 302 gold medals in 28 sports.

Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the Games open.

Befittingly for the world's most populous nation, Friday's show unleashed wave upon wave of humanity into the arena, revelling in past glories, like the invention of gunpowder, but also more modern triumphs, like putting astronauts into space.

The careful choreography of the ceremony extended well beyond the stadium and 100,000 police fanned out to prevent attacks and protests, while dissidents have been kept out of sight.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued an appeal at the ceremony calling on warring nations to honour a traditional truce during the Games, but his message went unheeded with fierce fighting in Georgia during the day involving Russian forces.

Further denting the Olympic ideal of harmony, the two Koreas failed to agree to march at the opening as a unified team even though they managed that in 2004 and 2000.

The 91,000-strong crowd saved its largest roar of the evening for the entry of the Chinese team, which is confidently expected to top the medals table for the first time and was headed onto the field by basketball player Yao Ming.

Yao was accompanied by a young boy who survived an earthquake in the southwest of the country in May which killed some 70,000.

"For a long time, China has dreamed of opening its doors and inviting the world's athletes to Beijing for the Olympic Games," Jacques Rogge, head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said. "Tonight that dream comes true. Congratulations, Beijing!"

TAIWAN CHEERED

There were also big cheers for the United States, North Korea and Iraq, and a thunderous applause for Taiwan, signalling a further sign of a thaw after years of icy relations.

China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since their split in 1949 amid civil war and insists the self-ruled democratic island must one day return to the fold.

US President George W Bush stood and waved a stars and stripes flag as the American team marched into the stadium.

The Games are centred in Beijing, but will stretch more than 2,000-km, with equestrian events in Hong Kong, soccer dotted around the country and yachting in the eastern city of Qingdao.

The sporting action gets into top gear on Saturday with competition underway in 18 disciplines, including swimming and gymnastics, and seven gold medals up for grabs.

Among the early competitors is US swimmer Michael Phelps, who could become the first athlete to win eight golds in a single Games and the most titled Olympian ever.
But as in 2004, the build up to the Beijing Games has been marred by drug taking. A number of athletes have failed tests in the weeks leading up to the Olympics and officials have promised about 4,500 doping checks in Beijing to root out the cheats.

Now Tamannah is having 4 films in Tamil on hand and is concentrating hard to complete them by this year end simultaneously. Kajal also busy doing her three films in Tamil.

About the landing into films:

Never in my wildest dreams that I thought of making entry into films! With my uncle's sudden demise, my family was in doldrums. That made me to step into movies. So when I was giving performances as classical dancer, Pratyegatma noticed my skills and offered me a role (I was sister to hero Krishnam Raju) in his film Chilaka Gorinka (1966).

On why she never tried to be heroine!

I do not know the exact reason but from the beginning I felt that I was not suitable to be a leading lady. I didn't have the body structure to carry off glam roles. So I choose to be a character artiste or second leading lady and portrayed different types of roles. If I were heroine, I would have been vanished long back. I thank god for choosing the path of a character actress.

On pairing with the artists:

I will be grateful to Padmanabham garu who agreed to do the first film with me. At that time Gitanjali and he were considered to be a hit pair. When director Pratyagatma told him that I was playing opposite him in Chilaka Gorikana, he didn't object to it. In fact, he encouraged me a lot. After that I had paired mostly with Rajababu garu. We together had done more than 100 movies although I had acted with almost all the heroes of that time - Chalam, Ramakrishna, Shoban Babu, Krishna, etc.

On marriage and divorce:

I was married to actor Sharat Babu and we were separated. Sharat was four years younger to me. I gave a bold statement at that time saying that Seeta is older than Lord Rama (laughs). Our marriage did last for fourteen years.

I married for a shoulder to lean and he married for support. In a way, it was a matter of convenience. We won many awards as best couple on the screen. Off the screen we weren't that way. I loved him honestly but he did't. I acted on screen and he acted off the screen, I can say.

About the winning and losing

I had earned a lot of money and amassed wealth. But it didn't last. It is entirely my fault. It was my mistake to trust persons whom I shouldn't even allow them to enter in my life. So why blame others for my misery?

Don't ask me as to what happened and who did cheat me. It is a sad thing that some of us have not learnt from our peers - Nagayyaa garu and Savitri garu both of them have lost everything towards end of their career. We did the same mistakes.

On turning into spiritual:

After the bitter divorce, I was depressed. At that time, Saibaba devotees came to me. I was also reading books of Ramana Maharishi, Osho etc at that time. But I was inspired by the preaching of Baba and became his devotee. Yet, I will not perform the pooja and other rituals.

The fresh beginning:

I didn't do anything for five years. I was leading reclusive life then. One day I got a call from Krishnavamsi for the film Ninne Pelladata. That became a hit and Premante Idera followed and offers started coming again. I became busy actress once again. I am leading peaceful life now.

On past and present:

I made many mistakes and had bad virtues. I was boozer at that time and smoked a lot and partied wild. Later I had realized that that is not the life one should lead. I took up acting again only not to be dependent. I want to construct an old age home and spiritual center in Ongole. I want to spend my life with the others who are like me. I do not have that much money now to set it up but may be in future with the help of others I might start.

ATelugu film song in a graduation course text book? Yes you heard it right. A song penned by lyricist Dr Andesri for the film Erra Samudram has inspired the university syllabus committee to include it in the Telugu second year graduation text books for the next academic year starting in 2009.

The song Maayamai Pothundamma Manishanavadu is a lament on the erosion of human values in this insensitive world. This is the third song to feature in Telugu syllabi after
Maa Telugu Thalliki and Telugu Jathi Manadi in the 77 years of Telugu cinema. Interestingly, both songs were from the pens of the literary giants Sankarambadi Sundaracharyulu and C Narayana Reddy respectively and both subsequently became film songs. However Maa Telugu Thaliki first became a state anthem then was used in the film Bullet while CNR's celebration of Telugu pride and unity was initially heard in the film Thalla Pellama before attracting the attention of academicians and the state government.

After receiving an honourary doctorate from Kakatiya University, lyricist Andesri added another feather to his cap as his song was approved by academicians for its inclusion in college text books. About the landmark song, he says, "Human beings have succeeded in everything but have lost what it takes to be an ideal human being and this was one of my favourite themes," informs Andesri who felt that the maker could have chosen a better situation in the film to justify the song.

Will this milestone stir up Telugu lyricists to spin more profound lyrics to join the elite club? "We are ready," announces promising lyricist Vanamaali who described it as a tribute to an inspiring song at a time when film songs are branded as ‘use and throw’. However, he is quick to add, “We need filmmakers who will provide us ideal situations and also a composer to make it listener-friendly.” Hope filmmakers are listening! .
